If Godard and Averty never met, no one thought of publicly organising their dialogue. They only mentioned each other on rare occasions. Moreover, the rigid and readily prescriptive distinction between television and cinema did not favour the conditions for a real exchange between the two creators. Was Averty simply a sharp recycler of Godard's cinema, which was unsurpassed in the 1960s? A more precise comparison (for example, with France Gall, the programme ‘Des goûts et des couleurs’ or the censored TV film Le Gai Savoir) reveals unexpected relationships of influence.
In many respects, Averty predates Histoire(s) du cinéma in the way he uses the printed page and video tricks. As inventors constantly on the alert, the two men followed each other at a distance. Children of the letter and the book in the age of the image, they had in common the need to maintain the qualities specific to the printed word in their relationship with history and memory, and to herald a permeability of media that is now the norm.
