Born in Amsterdam in 1938, Johan van der Keuken is considered one of the greatest filmmakers and photographers of the 20th century. He tried his hand at photography at the age of 12, and published his first album in 1955: We are 17. L'œil lucide, the only monograph to cover his photographic work from 1953 to 2000, presents a selection he made himself. Johan van der Keuken died in January 2001.
